When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, a lot of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system may suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these red flags sound like what you are undergoing with your furnace, it could be time to start researching a new system.
